William Greenlaw sailing from Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, in the ship, Dolphin. The Dolphin landed at Piscataqua, ME, where the immigrants remained for about a week or possibly longer, then proceeded up St. Georges River and landed at what is now known as Warren, ME. The family later relocated to Boston, MA, then to Penobscot, Deer Isle, ME, sometime prior to 1762, where they settled on Campbells Neck.

The year 2003 marks the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the William and Jane Greenlaw and their family in America. They set sail from Scotland and arrived on the coast of Maine in the summer of 1753.

Greenlaw, which means "a verdant hill," is an old family name from Berwickshire in the southern lowlands of Scotland in the Borders region, along the border with England. There is a small town bearing the name Greenlaw which was the ancient county town of Berwickshire and is situated on the River Blackadder and on the old coach road from Edinburgh to London. The Greenlaws are a sept, or family, of the Home Clan (pronounced Hume) and as such Greenlaw descendants are entitled to wear the Home Clan tartan. An American Greenlaw tartan is now being designed and produced in honor of the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Greenlaws in North America.

Greenlaw is not a common name in North America with the highest concentration of Greenlaws located in New Brunswick, Canada; and in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts in the US. It may be safely assumed that all of these Greenlaws are descended from William and Jane and their family who arrived aboard The Dolphin in 1753.

During the American Revolution some of the Greenlaws were Loyalists with their allegiance to the English Crown, and, after the revolution, many Greenlaws migrated to St. Andrews, New Brunswick which was then part of Nova Scotia.
