John Greenlaw and Elizabeth (Thomson) Greenlaw. The Baptism of:
Janet Greenlaw born January 18th, 1731.Wittnessed by Andrew Thomson and James Thomson. (AL 1731 pg. 235)

BIOGRAPHY: Midlothian - The County

BIOGRAPHY: Midlothian lies due south of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city.

BIOGRAPHY: Midlothian is an area of great diversity and attractions. Occupying the broad valley between the Moorfoot Hills and Pentland Hills, Midlothian bestrides the North and South Esk rivers as they flow towards the wide Firth of Forth.

BIOGRAPHY: It has rich farmland - some of the best in Scotland - and stark hillsides for grazing sheep. In some of the more remote parts, the lochs provide a resting place for migrating geese.

BIOGRAPHY: Midlothian has many places of architectural and historical interest; castles, old churches, stately homes, a prehistoric dwelling and villages full of character. Also, Midlothian has industry and modern technology and bustling towns and villages, where most of the population of 80,000 residents live.

BIOGRAPHY: Since local government reorganisation in Scotland in 1995, Midlothian has been administered by Midlothian Council, a single tier authority. In earlier times, Midlothian included much of the area that is now within the City of Edinburgh. However since a prior reorganisation in 1975, Midlothian has developed into the present compact area of 137 square miles.

BIOGRAPHY: Over 95 per cent of Midlothian’s population live in the area’s built-up areas - the main towns and villages. Penicuik with a population of over 18,000, is the largest community, followed by Bonnyrigg (14,500), Dalkeith (12,000), Mayfield (9,000), Loanhead(6,500), Gorebridge (6,000) and Newtongrange (4,000).

BIOGRAPHY: There are also sizeable villages at Danderhall, Roslin, Rosewell and Pathhead.

BIOGRAPHY: Almost a quarter of Midlothian is classified as prime agricultural land, with the northern most fringes of the District being amongst the most productive farmland in Scotland. In all, about 80 per cent of Midlothian’s land area is farmed, with a further 5 per cent or so, devoted to woodlands.

BIOGRAPHY: The Pentland Hills Regional Park, which extends to 9,158 hectares (22,600 acres), lies partly within Midlothian. Hillend Country Park, which contains the largest dry ski facility in Western Europe, it also lies within the district. In addition, the Midlothian Council maintains major facilities at Vogrie Country Park (260 acres) and at Roslin Glen Country Park (51 acres).

BIOGRAPHY: There are 21 Conservation Areas in Midlothian, three of which (Dalkeith, Mavisbank and Borthwick and Crichton) are considered to be ‘outstanding’; 15 Sites of Special Scientific Interest; and 29 scheduled and about 250 unscheduled ancient monuments.

BIOGRAPHY: There are in addition, 438 buildings of architectural or historical interest. Fifty are A-listed, ie structures of national importance, and these include Borthwick and Crichton Castles, Arniston, Dalkeith and Penicuik Houses, Newbattle Abbey, Roslin Chapel and, reflecting the District’s more recent industrial heritage, Bilston Viaduct and the Lady Victoria Colliery Engine House.

BIOGRAPHY: A recent survey (1990), by the Council, revealed that there are over 456.5 hectares (1,141 acres) of vacant and derelict sites in Midlothian. This total includes disused railways, limekilns, mill sites, coal bings, coal stocking yards and sandpits.

BIOGRAPHY: The local authority, in conjunction with Lothian and Edinburgh Enterprise Ltd, have over the last few years, been tackling the main areas of dereliction. Major restoration schemes have been completed at the Emily, Gore and Gore Glen bings in Gorebridge, at Ramsay bing in Loanhead, at Easthouses bing, Roslin Glen, Woolmet and Roslin bings and at Polton Mill. Not only have the eyesores been removed, but landscaped recreational facilities (parks and pitches) have been created in their place. A number of smaller sites across the district have been environmentally treated in similar fashion.

BIOGRAPHY: The treatment of derelict sites is continuing. Work on the major restoration scheme at Valleyfield, Penicuik, has now been completed.

BIOGRAPHY: Midlothian has many flourishing examples of voluntary groups - sporting, musical, children’s and young people’s, twinning, retired people’s, local history and many others.

BIOGRAPHY: So Midlothian has, in recent years, become a more and more agreeable place in which to live and work, and has a great deal for visitors and residents to enjoy. It offers all the pleasures of the countryside and at the same time, is close to the many cultural, shopping and other facilities of an internationally famous city.

BIOGRAPHY: Midlothian is twinned with the counties of Heinsberg in the Nordrhein-Westfalen region of Germany and Komárom-Esztergom in Hungary

Greenlaw Parish Church

Located 7 miles (11 km) south west of Duns and 12 miles (19 km) north west of Coldstream, on the Blackadder Water, Greenlaw was built in the late 17th Century and functioned as the county town of Berwickshire for 207 years until 1903, a title it shared with Duns after 1853. Its Market Cross (1696) and Kirk (1675) are its oldest structures though the cross was removed for most of the 19th century and is now west of the Kirk. The last public hanging in Scotland took place at Greenlaw Kirk in 1834.

Hume Castle (13th century), 3 miles (5 km) south of Greenlaw, was the seat of the Home family; destroyed in the 17th century, it was restored in the late 18th century.
