"3 million fought - 600,000 died, the only war fought on American soil by Americans"
THE CIVIL WAR
(1861-1865)

Sewall's Point, Virginia

Saturday May 18,1861

At Sewall's Point on shore Confederate Batteries were attacked by two gunboats of the Federal Navy. One being the Monticello. This was a part of the blockade to all ports from the sea being closed off by the Union so supplies and shipping could not help the Conferderates fight.
The last area to be sealed off was the Rappahannock River completing the blockades to Virginia's shipping routes. Though this plan was completed by the Federal's it seems to have had no bearing on the war. Only 10 casualties were reported. The commanders in this scirmish were Lt. D.L. Braine U.S.N. [US]; Brig. Gen. Walter Gwynn and Capt.  Peyton Colquitt [CS] . The Federal Navy was ordered to seal off all ports and shipping areas from the Viginian Coast to the Texan Coast.
